Uta visiting me has been a stimulus to get some work done! She's on the road right now in North Carolina visiting other friends, but she's going to be back here for two days before catching her plane back to Munich. So I have had two weeks in which to make the "integration" quilt that I've been putting off for months, in time for Uta to take it back to Europe with her.

I was going through old boxes of stuff and found a bag of fabric that I had bought years ago during a workshop at the Crow Barn. I liked the four batik patterns in green and brown, especially the one with stripes, because I was just starting to work extensively with stripes. (Since then I've made at least a dozen quilts from stripes and bought four drawers worth of striped fabrics!)

I did a day's worth of piecing at the Barn before I decided that I didn't really like what was happening, and packed everything up. Years passed.

When I came upon the bag last week I decided it wasn't so bad after all, and if I were to sew up the parts I had already begun it would fit the IT theme of "integration," because the green and brown fabrics started separate at top and bottom of the quilt and together in the center.

I feel good about this quilt. It isn't beautiful, but that has never been a problem with me. I like the graphic quality of the color contrast, and the pale green reminds me of the very first leaves of springtime. That made me feel cool and refreshed in the midst of a hot and humid August week.
I finished the hand-stitching quilt some time ago but never got around to putting a sleeve on the back or posting a photo to the blog.

It started as an exercise in hand stitching from the wrong side of the fabric -- I find that when you can't tell exactly what you're doing, it gives a great air of spontaneity and surprise. When I realized that I could use this piece as the center of my International Threads quilt, I decided this would be an experiment to see how I liked putting machine stitching (the quilting) on top of hand stitching, which I had never done before.

I added black fabric around the edges of the stitched piece to make it the right size for IT, quilted it, and then added a lot more hand stitching over the top. Some of the additional stitching was to partially cover the machine quilting, so those lines didn't stand out quite so strongly. Some was just because I find it hard to stop stitching once I get started!

Now that Uta is here in the U.S. I quickly finished the sleeve so she can take the quilt back to Europe with her next week.
Uta has been visiting the United States this month, and spent a week with us in Louisville before heading off for several other stops, including watching the eclipse. We had a great reunion and she got to meet several members of my family that she hadn't met before, including Vivian, who will be four months old next week.

Here's Vivian hypnotized by Uta's knitting!
Life seems to be getting in the way lately. And that is also the inspiration for my theme:

Hand stitched

Lately, I have started to sew by hand - simply because I spend so much time sitting at the computer that I do not really enjoy sitting at the sewing machine as much as I used to. In my small world, hand sewing offers a greater potential to relax and take it easy, and it gives me a greater freedom to piece complicated patterns. That is why I would love to see your interpretation of the theme. Now before you groan or kill me: it does not have to be completely hand stitched. I'll be perfectly happy to settle with ONE visible had stitch on the piece, if that is what you are going for.

Happy Holidays and happy stitching!
Everybody agreed that it is indeed a very nice exhibition. We are showing 58 quilts in total. In one section, a small retrospective of Ita's work is assembled together, with a few more of her quilts throughout the gallery as well.
Public transport makes a lot of things possible - this time the exhibition was pushed around on a wheelbarrow, in two sturdy boxes.
Good to know where the escalators go up when you're coming from the subway station!
We had to change all the hanging arrangements, and worked hard.

It is based on the traffic light symbols going back to times when there was still an East German little man on them that looked much happier and more springy than the stiff and boring West German one. Sometime after the wall came down, a little Girl appeared, too - I admit, I have not gone into the history of the development of this little sign.
Photos can be found on the internet.
Like this, or perhaps just a little bit different? In the end, the girls in the lower part were moved around a bit. The title is Chrisse Seager's suggestion.
I am embarrassed at how far behind I got on IT assignments -- this spring I did very little but sew Quilt National entries. But I finally finished the autumn colors quilt.

After I finished the Quilt National things, I decided I needed to do some cleaning of the studio and was sorting and consolidating a bunch of samples that I had made in Nancy Crow workshops a long time ago. I came upon this piece,

noticed the colors, and decided it might be recycled into an "autumn" quilt.

My first thought was just to take the left-hand part of the composition, trim it to IT size and quilt it, but then decided it needed something more.

There were no leftover bits of the autumn colors fabric in the bag with this piece, but fortunately in my cleanup I had also come upon some yellow, orange and red fabrics that were sitting there waiting to be put away, and I used them for fine lines. Here's what I came up with:

I've had this quilt pretty much finished on the design wall for weeks, trying to decide if it needs some hand stitching in addition to the machine quilting. I think it does, but lest everybody think I'm a slacker, thought I would post it anyway.

Several months ago I wrote in my blog about a quilt I really liked in a show, and about the pieced "ladders" that were an important design element. Somebody left a comment that she wished she could figure out how to make pieced ladders, so I did a how-to blog post. I used some blue and green fabrics that were sitting on my worktable waiting to be put away (I had given them to a quilting pal who needed more greens for a project, and she brought back what she hadn't used).

So having pieced enough ladders for the tutorial, I decided to make more and use them for my Green quilt.
With moving house and then Ian having surgery it's been a long, long time since I’ve done any sewing. But with Ian back at work, and inspired by FoQ (lovely to catch up with Uta and Gillian),I’ve made the first in the backlog and have ideas for others.I'm on a roll! This one is one of a series about losing my wedding and engagement rings while collecting rare fen orchids on Catfield Fen.The reeds are taller than I am! You can read more about this green series here.magsramsayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16559934058887308651noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1034951180670494692.post-30152937399394627972016-08-17T10:36:00.000+01:002016-08-17T10:36:03.398+01:00"Green"After I returned from Israel I wanted to start on the signs-and-symbols-challenge, because that was the one most overdue. (I hate being overdue, which is a constant status of mine at the library, too....) Instead, with Gillian's new challenge on my mind I went ahead and did the one to meet my challenge, 'green'.

It uses a piece of green hand-dyed linen which had been begging me to do something with it. And it uses a study piece I made in an online class where we were supposed to make a sketch letting us be inspired by a famous artist (for which I chose a mixture of M. Rothko and J. Albers).

This is what it looked like before it became part of this challenge - it had some machine quilting and some hand stitching, but it just didn't seem finished, and I was still debating which direction would be the most appropriate:

So I turned it by 180 degrees, added to the batting and the background and put my green linen around it.

Some more hand stitching, some quilting on the longarm, and a few other things added:

Gillian is a standard there, and so is Margret, and this year I was lucky enough to be able to go, too.
So we took a picture of the three of us at the SAQA meeting.

Margret and I talked about how nice it would be to have a meeting where actually all of us could get together. Nothing planned yet - but perhaps one of the others has an idea where we could try to arrange for that?Uta Lenkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15641327859827054439noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1034951180670494692.post-84677655420726184312016-07-04T14:05:00.004+00:002016-09-13T17:51:39.220+01:00New Challenge

It's my turn to choose a title for the next challenge

The title is Integration

I have chosen this as I have just spent 2 weeks in Israel and it seemed a very appropriate title.
There are so many ways that it could be interpreted
I am looking forward to see what you come up with
Then I overlaid it with an enlarged transfer of a drawing by Ellsworth Kelly. This required a bit of puzzling around, with mirror image and transfer etc.
Of course, I ran out of bobbin thread less than 10" from the end, but that's the way it goes. And I had just about enough thread left to put that on the bobbin to last me to the very end:

Barbara met me at the station in Freising and threw me some more - her - quilts, which we packed into the suitcase, too. Because of time constraints in jumping off one (late) train, repacking, and getting onto the next one only a few minutes later, no picture of this momentous occasion was taken.
But here is a picture of the legendary suitcase in Chalon-sur-Saone:

Unfortunately, this may be its last trip, because whereas in this picture the handle still is extendable, it has now blocked, and pulling or carrying the case without an extended handle is not a pleasant entertainment. In any case - I got to Beaujolais alright.
We are part of Quilt Expo Beaujolais which has been renamed:
Our gallery is right next to the SAQA-exhibition "Two by Twenty", in the upper left hand corner of the floor plan (no. 51):

Despite the fact that we have a good-sized gallery space, I could not put up all our quilts, so I chose the complete sections 'blue' and 'red' and 'change of scale'. Most of 'black to grey with a bit of color' (Kathy's textilie sketch of the prize winner is in the middle of the picture), a couple of 'proof of sketching' and a small selection of 'lines'.
Visitors are very favorable, they admire the variety of styles AND the homogeneity of appearance at the same time. The arrangement works very well, and it transitions from one color to the next nicely. It is a lot of fun to be sitting in this exhibition!Uta Lenkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15641327859827054439noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1034951180670494692.post-59933715929234243882016-04-05T18:19:00.001+01:002016-04-05T18:19:43.367+01:00thank you, International Threads!
You will remember the gray scale challenge that was the second quilt in International Threads' existence. Our dear late Ita Ziv was the one who gave this challenge, and the rules were that you had to use a wide variety of shades of gray, plus only a tiny bit of another color. I loved the quilt I made for that challenge, which was a new technique for me.

I wrote about it here. Some time after this post, I decided on a name: Linear A, after the ancient Greek writing that was eventually deciphered by archaeologists.

I loved the technique, and the quilt, so much that I decided to make it again, virtually identical in design and fabrics, except almost three times the size.
I'm so happy to report that the big one is now in Art Quilt Elements, a juried show at the Wayne Art Center outside Philadelphia, and it won the juror's award, which is the second prize, right after best in show. And it never would have happened without International Threads.
Ok, what do I do now - I already skipped the Afghan Square. No way I'm going to ditch this one.
So now what?

Why do I not like autumn colors? Probably the promise of cold, wet and dark days looming ahead is what really turns me off.

On the other side, autumn has beautiful sides to offer - Chinese lanterns, ripe berries, red maple leaves, asters and pumpkins. So I decided to focus on this color palette - even though it is not the typical autumn color palette you would expect.
After making the spirals, the quilt seemed to be empty in a way so I took to my harshest critique - my daughter. She suggested a green bug. But the only ones I could find which related to autumn were ladybugs and stink bugs. Ladybugs were out of the question - way to cute for my liking. Stink bugs are edgy enough - but most of them are brown. BROWN! Ugh.

So - Gear Wheels! Just because I like them. Yay!

It went through a number of planning stages.
This was my original square:

Although the background suggested it, I did not want to 'turn traditional', and at first thought I could stretch, turn, mirror and replicate the shape of the orginal motif. Planning by photoshop and sketching looked like this.

Of course, eight of the blocks - i.e. all the ones that would have been not the original size - would have been pieced. But somehow this didn't really talk to me.
Then we had a left-over square anyway, and Barbara offered to give me hers, too, so I figured I could use three instead of only one. I also had a piece of a real Afghan tchador (if that's what it's called there), which I had dyed blue, and started figuring out how to include that.
