Opening in Munich, at Quilt und Textilkunst Galerie

Friday evening we had the opening of our exhibition in Munich. A select crowd of interested people came, and we were very happy to get a chance to talk to most of them.

Everybody agreed that it is indeed a very nice exhibition. We are showing 58 quilts in total. In one section, a small retrospective of Ita's work is assembled together, with a few more of her quilts throughout the gallery as well.

Here is a walk through the entire gallery, starting upstairs, in the section that features the challenge "Blue".

The exhibition is open until December 3, Monday through Friday from 10  to 6, and Saturdays 10 to 4.

Hanging the exhibition in Munich

Barbara Lange and I met on the train and had a busy afternoon putting up the exhibition in Munich, at Quilt et Textilkunst Gallery, Sebastiansplatz.
Public transport makes a lot of things possible - this time the exhibition was pushed around on a wheelbarrow, in two sturdy boxes.

Good to know where the escalators go up when you're coming from the subway station!
We had to change all the hanging arrangements, and worked hard.

And yes, you may very well wonder how we managed to get these four up there. Sorry, now photo of that process, because both of us were seriously involved...

A few first impressions, but the real thing will only be seen tomorrow, when we have the opening.

International Threads in Beaujolais

I took the train to Beaujolais on Monday, with most of the quilts packed into the large red suitcase.

Barbara met me at the station in Freising and threw me some more - her - quilts, which we packed into the suitcase, too. Because of time constraints in jumping off one (late) train, repacking, and getting onto the next one only a few minutes later, no picture of this momentous occasion was taken.
But here is a picture of the legendary suitcase in Chalon-sur-Saone:

Unfortunately, this may be its last trip, because whereas in this picture the handle still is extendable, it has now blocked, and pulling or carrying the case without an extended handle is not a pleasant entertainment. In any case - I got to Beaujolais alright.
We are part of Quilt Expo Beaujolais which has been renamed:

Our gallery is right next to the SAQA-exhibition "Two by Twenty", in the upper left hand corner of the floor plan (no. 51):

Despite the fact that we have a good-sized gallery space, I could not put up all our quilts, so I chose the complete sections 'blue' and 'red' and 'change of scale'. Most of 'black to grey with a bit of color' (Kathy's  textilie sketch of the prize winner is in the middle of the picture), a couple of 'proof of sketching' and a small selection of 'lines'.

Visitors are very favorable, they admire the variety of styles AND the homogeneity of appearance at the same time. The arrangement works very well, and it transitions from one color to the next nicely. It is a lot of fun to be sitting in this exhibition!

Russia

Last month we were invited to Russia by the Russian Cultural Office.
We have an exhibition in Moscow at the Jewish Community Center
It's a trio exhibition of of Ita Ziv, Rahel Elran and myself.
It was a pleasure to meet Barbara and be with her on this trip.

We gave Ita's quilts a great respect and we think that this exhibition will be a good way to remember her.

We put the quilts up sorted by assignments. We have six booths, each of which takes one assignment (with two minor 'redefinitions' of pieces that fit equally well into another booth, simply for reasons of symmetrical distribution).

International Threads in Prague

Kathy Loomis arrived in Germany on Tuesday, 

and yesterday we took the train to Prague, where International Thread is having its first international exhibition.

Together with Barbara, who was already there when we arrived, we worked hard putting it all up. 

At first we were debating whether we would put up each member’s quilts together, but eventually we decided on arranging them ‘by assignment’: Red, From Grey to White with a Dash of Color, Repetition and Pattern, Change of Scale, Lines, Proof of Sketch, Blue.

We have six sections of panels, and the sides to the entire arrangement, which fits perfectly to the number of seven assignments. In order to arrive at an even distribution, and because some members had made a couple of extra quilts, we were able to have six assignments arranged all in one section (with only one or two ‘redefinitions’ due to a more coherent arrangement).

We were finished just before eight o’clock in the evening, worn out after a long day. And very proud of a coherent and interesting exhibition on display, starting at 12 noon today.
